Wewurukannala Raja Maha Vihara Temple - Dickwella

24Km east of Matara is the town of Dikwella, where there is one of the most extra ordinary Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka. The Wewurukannala Raja Maha Vihara Temple is dominated by an image of a seated Load Buddha. It is 160ft high, the largest Buddha statue in Sri Lanka and dates back to the time of 18th century (1782 - 1798). The temple has three parts, the oldest being about 250 years old and A resident elephant are among the secondary highlights of this Wewurukannala Raja Maha Vihara Temple.

Overview

The ancient Mulkirigala (also called Mulgirigala ) temple is perched on an enormous boulder more than 200m high. According to ancient inscriptions carved on the rock Mulgirigala dates back almost 2,000 years when it was a site of a Buddhist monastery. The temple complex consists of ancient murals, a recumbent Buddha statue, devalayas and several cave temples all of which are found at different levels while ascending the peak of the rock.

Mulkirigala (also called Mulgirigala) is a village in Sri Lanka located near Viraketiya in the Giruva Pattuva of the district of Hambantota of Southern Province of the ancient tropical island of Sri Lanka.

Mulkirigala (also called Mulgirigala) is a convenient half a day excursion from the pristine tropical bay beaches of Sri Lanka Holidays Tangalle of Southern Coastal Belt.  25 minutes journey in-land from the beautiful south western beaches of Dikwella in the district of Matara or Tangalla Bay Beach in the district of Hambantota.

Mulkirigala (also called Mulgirigala) of Southern Province has been a tourist attraction in its own right in view of its historical Buddhist rock cave temple monastery reminiscent of Golden Dambulla Rock Cave Temple at Dambulla of North Central Province of Sri Lanka.
